Effenberg wanted by Wien

German midfield player Stefan Effenberg is close to agreeing a deal with FK Austria Wien.

German midfield player Stefan Effenberg is close to agreeing a deal with FK Austria Wien.

Free agent
Effenberg's contract with FC Bayern München ran out in June and ever since the former international, who won the UEFA Champions League with Bayern in 2001, has been looking for a new club as a free agent.

'Satisfying' contract
In an interview for German television, Effenberg said the contract he had been offered by Wien was "satisfying". "The discussion was very good and fruitful," he added. "We will meet again on Thursday to discuss details."

'Nice impression'
Wien sports manager Peter Svettis said: "He made a very nice impression. His physical condition is good. Money does not play a role for him. I told him our offer and Stefan accepted it. Now I have to speak with coach Walter Schachner. I felt the fire within Stefan. He still wants to achieve something and this I could clearly sense."
