Aigner visits Cairo charity

UEFA Chief Executive Gerhard Aigner has paid a visit to the Egyptian Red Crescent in Cairo.

UEFA Chief Executive Gerhard Aigner has paid a visit to the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) headquarters in Cairo.

Children in war
The visit came as part of the 2003 UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup, which is being held in Egypt until next Saturday, with the competition being used to highlight awareness of the plight of children in war. UEFA enjoys a strong partnership with both the ERC and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Wide introduction
Mr Aigner, accompanied by UEFA's director of communications Mike Lee, was given a presentation introducing the role, purpose and aims of the ICRC in their cross-boarder approach of co-operation with the Egyptian Red Crescent.

Positive role
During a detailed tour of the ERC headquarters, the UEFA delegation was shown some of its smaller suburban centres within Cairo and the effectiveness of sport in promoting rehabilitation for children affected by war.

Aigner impressed
"Since we have established this partnership it was interesting to see the practical work being done," said Aigner. "I am equally impressed to see how many competent people provide their assistance to aid these people. As far as the future is concerned, it's indeed very assuring for us to have witnessed the many tasks undertaken by ERC and the level of responsibility devoted to these tasks."
