García Remón finds contentment

Real Madrid CF coach Mariano García Remón said he was "happy with 1-0" as they defeated FC Dynamo Kyiv.

Real Madrid CF coach Mariano García Remón said he was "happy" with his side's UEFA Champions League Group B victory against FC Dynamo Kyiv. Michael Owen scored the only goal of the game - and his first for Madrid - on 35 minutes, but Dynamo coach Joszef Szabo was left to rue his side's failure to capitalise on an excellent spell either side of half-time. Madrid now join tonight's opponents and Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the top of the group, level on six points.

Mariano García Remón, Real Madrid coach
I think that Dynamo are the hardest team in a difficult group, so as far as I am concerned, I have chosen the best team for this game and we have come away with the win. We are an attacking side and we know there will be times when we struggle at the back, so it was not a surprise to see us defending so hard at the death. We were excellent for the first 25 minutes, though, before [Luís] Figo went off and we were forced to change our tactics. To be fair, [Santiago] Solari was excellent when he came on, as was Michael Owen. He has great movement, a lot of quality and worked well on the flanks tonight. Both sides should have scored more goals but found the two goalkeepers in terrific form, so I am happy with 1-0.

Joszef Szabo, Dynamo Kyiv coach
At the end of the day, a game is simply eleven men against eleven, and if we do our jobs then we will always do well. We should have won this match because our performance at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second was excellent. We had a number of good opportunities and the referee turned down two decent penalty claims. Looking ahead, nobody in this group can be guaranteed a victory, and although Madrid have many good players, our supporters can help us to victory in Ukraine.

Michael Owen, Real Madrid striker
It has been a fantastic night. A lot of people thought it was a mistake coming here but I have always been one to back myself and cannot think of anyone who would turn down the chance to play at a club like this. Going away with England has probably helped me and given me a lot of confidence, so I have come back with a fresh spring in my step. I was not expecting to come here and play in every game, I knew I was going to have to bide my time and fight to get minutes on the pitch. The first few months have been difficult but it is all starting to come together.
