"He is extremely strong in the air and I am convinced he will help us become a more stable unit," said sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer.
'Perfect time'
Former Arsenal FC, Nîmes Olympique SC and Olympique de Marseille player Demel added: "I think Hamburg are on the right track if they are going to be a big club again. This is the perfect time to transfer to this team."

Hamburg, who also signed Netherlands midfielder Rafael van der Vaart in May, begin their 2005/06 campaign at home to FK Pobeda of F.Y.R. Macedonia in the UEFA Intertoto Cup second round on Saturday, with the return the following weekend. Dortmund enter the competition a round later.
