Demel heads for Hamburg

Hamburger SV have snapped up defender Guy Demel on a free transfer from Bundesliga rivals BV Borussia Dortmund.

'Strong in the air'
The 24-year-old Ivory Coast international has agreed a two-year deal with the 1983 European champions, having struggled to claim a regular place at Dortmund. "He is extremely strong in the air and I am convinced he will help us become a more stable unit," said sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer.

'Perfect time'
Former Arsenal FC, Nîmes Olympique SC and Olympique de Marseille player Demel added: "I think Hamburg are on the right track if they are going to be a big club again. This is the perfect time to transfer to this team."

Intertoto date
Hamburg, who also signed Netherlands midfielder Rafael van der Vaart in May, begin their 2005/06 campaign at home to FK Pobeda of F.Y.R. Macedonia in the UEFA Intertoto Cup second round on Saturday, with the return the following weekend. Dortmund enter the competition a round later.
