Valencia CF have awarded Spanish international striker David Villa a new contract until the summer of 2013 after a hugely impressive first season with the Primera División club.

Instant impact
The 24-year-old moved to the Mestalla last summer after scoring 32 league goals over two campaigns with Real Zaragoza. Villa originally signed a deal until 2010 with Valencia, but his 15 goals in 26 Primera División appearances have persuaded the east-coast side to offer improved terms.

Title challenge
Villa has also registered in his last two matches for Spain, having won five caps in total. His goals have lifted Valencia to second place in the table with 52 points, nine behind FC Barcelona with eleven games remaining.
