Real Sociedad de Fútbol have confirmed the appointment of Philippe Montanier as their new coach on a two-year contract.
Frenchman Montanier has left his post at Ligue 1 side Valenciennes FC to take over at the San Sebastian club who under Martin Lasarte escaped relegation by two points in 2010/11, their first season back in Spain's top tier after a three-year absence. Montanier will be joined in northern Spain by his assistant Michel Troin and follows in the footsteps of Raynald Denoueix, the Frenchman who took Real into the UEFA Champions League in 2004.
Montanier had held the reins at Valenciennes since 2009 and led them to a 12th-place finish in France this year. The 46-year-old ex-goalkeeper made his name as a coach during five years at US Boulogne from 2004. He led the club to three promotions as they reached Ligue 1 in 2009 before his departure for Valenciennes.
