The German Football Association (DFB) have ended their contract with sporting director Robin Dutt in order to allow him to take the post as new SV Werder Bremen coach.

Dutt, 48, signed a contract with Bremen until June 2016, and takes his first club coaching role since departing Bayer 04 Leverkusen in April 2012. Bremen's general manager Thomas Eichin said of Thomas Schaaf's successor: "We have signed our number one choice in Robin Dutt and, as a result, are convinced that we can enjoy a successful new start with him."

Former SC Freiburg coach Dutt added: "I am really looking forward to being back on the sidelines again. Werder Bremen are a great club. It is an attractive challenge that lies ahead of me and I am driven to do my job well."

The coach will be hoping for an improved performance from the side, who were troubled by relegation fears for long spells, before ending the season in 14th in the Bundesliga. Schaaf had been in charge for 14 years but left earlier this month.
