Beşiktaş JK have appointed former Croatia coach Slaven Bilić on a three-year contract.

The former HNK Hajduk Split defender, 44, succeeds Samet Aybaba, who left the Black Eagles by mutual consent last month. Bilić vacated his post at FC Lokomotiv Moskva last week after leading the Russian club to ninth place – their worst finish since the break-up of the Soviet Union – in the Premier-Liga in his first season in charge.

Bilić had cultivated a glowing reputation after steering Croatia to the quarter-finals and last 16 of UEFA EURO 2008 and UEFA EURO 2012 respectively during six years at the national-team helm. He inherits a Beşiktaş team who finished third in the 2012/13 Turkish Super League.
