Liverpool FC have announced "an agreement in principle" to sign 20-year-old midfielder Emre Can from Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

The Merseyside club – who, as Premier League runners-up in 2013/14, will start next season in the UEFA Champions League group stage – will make Can their second signing of the summer "subject to documentation being completed". A German Under-21 international, Can made 29 Bundesliga appearances last term, scoring three goals, having left FC Bayern München for Leverkusen in summer 2013.

"Emre Can has made a rapid and positive development at Bayer 04 Leverkusen over the last 12 months," said the German side's CEO Michael Schade. "We would have liked to keep him at Leverkusen, but the buy-out clause was part of his contract. We wish him the best for his future development in the Premier League."
