Manuel Neuer: A very obvious choice for the goalkeeper's position. He is masterful not only in goal but also as an outfield player as he acts as a sweeper. He played a huge role in Germany's FIFA World Cup success. I would hand him the FIFA Ballon d'Or. He is a decent successor to Lev Yashin, the only previous goalkeeping Ballon d'Or winner.

David Alaba: He is not from a leading football country, in Austria. But Bayern never take players who are just above average – only the very top players get into their side.

Mats Hummels: I have kept a close eye on him this year. He was among the best players in Brazil and scored the winning goal in Germany's quarter-final against France. He has come on a lot.

Ezequiel Garay: He has moved from Benfica to Zenit but he is still a very classy defender. Garay is the most consistent player at Zenit and I have a lot of admiration for him.

Philipp Lahm: A versatile player. Josep Guardiola has uncovered his talent as a holding midfielder, but let's leave him on the right of defence. Since the 2006 World Cup, he has operated at a very high level for both Bayern and Germany.

Arjen Robben: Among the best in Europe almost every year – and it's no accident. He played very well at the World Cup and has never dropped his standards at Bayern, where he is still one of the leaders.

Luka Modrić: He is not usually in the spotlight but is key for Real Madrid; his place in the starting XI is never in doubt. He can make attacking passes, boasts impressive stamina and is always ready to track back to help his defence.

Toni Kroos: He had a terrific World Cup. I think it was a mistake for Bayern to let him go to Real Madrid. He is young, clever and consistent.

Ángel Di María: Madrid sold this highly talented player to Manchester United and Di María is already starting to repay his transfer fee and is a great asset. I am sure he can bring much more to his new team.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo: The competition in attack is very high. I could choose Robert Lewandowski or Karim Benzema, but Ronaldo and Messi are football geniuses. They can play anywhere up front – in the centre, on either wing or behind the striker. Both will definitely win more Ballon d'Ors. But this year is Neuer's!
