Beaten UEFA Europa League finalists SL Benfica have started their preparations for next season's UEFA Champions League, signing young Polish midfielder Paweł Dawidowicz from KS Lechia Gdańsk on a five-year contract.

The 1.88m-tall defensive midfielder Dawidowicz is celebrating his 19th birthday today after committing to a long-term deal with the Portuguese treble winners. No details have been released of any transfer fee, with reports saying the player will begin next term in Benfica's B team. Dawidowicz made his debut for Lechia in May 2013 and has scored once in 29 Polish top-flight games this season.

The Liga, Portuguese Cup and League Cup winners, who lost to Sevilla FC on penalties in last week's UEFA Europa League final in Turin, will enter the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League in the group stage.
