Santini walks out on Spurs

Former France coach Jacques Santini has resigned as head coach at Tottenham Hotspur FC after just four months.

Jol acts as caretaker
Santini took over at the English Premiership club in the summer after stepping down as France coach after UEFA EURO 2004™. Martin Jol, the club's assistant coach, will prepare the team for tomorrow's London derby against Charlton Athletic FC and, according to sporting director Frank Arnesen, a further statement "clarifying our position" is expected on Monday.

'Privates issues'
Santini said in a statement: "My time at Tottenham has been memorable and it is with deep regret that I take my leave. Private issues in my personal life have arisen which caused my decision. I have therefore requested to return to France. I very much hope that the wonderful fans will respect my decision. I should like to thank Frank Arnesen and Daniel Levy for their understanding. I wish the club and the supporters all the best for the season."

Run of defeats
The 52-year-old Frenchman becomes the fifth managerial casualty of the English Premiership season. Under Santini, Tottenham won three of their eleven league games, drawing four and losing four. They are presently in eleventh place after a run of three successive defeats.
