Grzegorz Lato, one of the outstanding players in Poland's football history, was today voted chairman of the Polish Football Association (PZPN).

World Cup hero
The 58-year-old former winger won the election in the first round, claiming a majority 57 of the 113 votes ahead of fellow candidates, Zdzislaw Krecina and Zbigniew Boniek. Lato, who since retiring from playing has worked at both the PZPN and the Polish parliament, remains best known for his national service as an attacking midfielder. He represented Poland at three FIFA World Cups, helping his country to third place at both the 1974 tournament – where he scored seven goals – and the 1982 showpiece.
