How UEFA trains and develops referees
To maintain high standards of officiating across our competitions, we organise regular courses, workshops and expert support for Europe’s top match officials. Training focuses on the interpretation and application of the Laws of the Game, communication, decision-making, physical preparation and the use of modern refereeing technology.
Biannual courses for top referees
In order to preserve the beauty of the game and maintain high standards of officiating throughout our competitions, we organise two courses each season, one in summer and one in winter, to prepare Europe's top officials for their duties.
During these courses, referees undergo intense training sessions that focus on various aspects of officiating, including the interpretation and application of football's laws and vital communication skills.
UEFA's team of experts, headed by director of refereeing Roberto Rosetti, deliver presentations, tests and workshops to ensure referees and assistant referees are ready for the demands that await them in European football's top competitions, such as the men's and women's UEFA Champions League or European Championship.
UEFA Centre of Refereeing Excellence (CORE)
The UEFA Centre of Refereeing Excellence supports young and promising referees and assistant referees as they prepare for the demands of international football. Through expert guidance, technical learning and practical support, the programme helps emerging officials develop the skills and confidence needed to progress.
How do I become a referee?
Our "Be a Referee!" campaign aims to increase knowledge about refereeing, highlight the importance of match officials to the game and inspire young people to consider taking up the whistle.
The campaign is part of a wider programme through which we support Europe's national football associations in their recruitment activities, targeting the recruitment of around 40,000 new referees per season.
