Eric Carrière has left one French UEFA Champions League contender for another in joining Olympique Lyonnais from FC Nantes Atlantique.

Player of the year
The midfielder, voted France’s player of the year last season after helping Nantes to the title, has signed a four-year contract worth €12.5m. His performances earned him his first four caps for France during the Confederations Cup in June.

‘Most ambitious club’
Carrière said: “I have been waiting for the deal to come through all summer. To leave the champions for the runners-up is not a decline because Lyon are the most regular and the most ambitious club in the French championship.”

Ankle injury
Carrière, who missed the first four games of this season because of an ankle injury, leaves a Nantes side struggling at the bottom of the table without a win in their first five games. Lyon, who sold striker Steve Marlet to English side Fulham FC for €18.3m on Tuesday, are joint leaders of the French first division with Lille OSC.
