Off the mark
Defeats against AS Monaco FC and RC Deportivo La Coruña had left PSV bottom of Group C without a point, but their 1-0 win in Athens not only took them up to third place, but extended AEK's unsuccessful search for a first Champions League victory to 15 games - although nine of those were draws.
Injury problems
However, PSV will enter the match without midfield players Johann Vogel and Mark van Bommel. The latter underwent groin surgery last week after being injured against AFC Ajax on 26 October. "After the match against Ajax we had a lot of injured players," said coach Guus Hiddink. "It gives me a lot of problems, but in the match against NAC Breda [which PSV won 3-1] the substitutes showed they were good enough. Mark van Bommel will not play but Theo Lucius is a good substitute."
Ooijer plays
Vogel, meanwhile, suffered a hamstring problem in training last week and Hiddink said: "The problems with Johann Vogel are bigger. He is still not fit and he will be replaced by [André] Ooijer." With Dennis Rommedahl struggling with a foot problem, Ji-Sung Park may start in his place, and Hiddink added: I am confident, but we must not forget that AEK need the three points. They will fight for their last chance in the Champions League."
Strikers confident
PSV strike partners Arjen Robben and Mateja Kezman are both in an upbeat mood, however, after the Matchday 3 win in Greece. Robben said: "The victory in Athens gives us a lot of confidence for the home match against AEK." Kezman added: "I was very surprised by the support of our fans. On Wednesday I will thank them with goals."
Away absentees
AEK coach Dusan Bajevic has similar problems to Hiddink. He said: "We have, just like PSV, a long list of injured players. I will be without [Michel] Kreek, [Vassilios] Borbokis, [Mihalis] Kapsis, [Grigorios] Georgatos and [Christos] Maladenis." Kofi Amponsah is also suspended after being dismissed against PSV, and Bajevic is aware that reaching the last 16 will be tough for his team.
Needing victory
"PSV have to win to stay in the race for the second round but we have to win to have a chance to continue our European tour in the UEFA Cup," he said. "They are in a better position than us, but we have to go to Eindhoven for a win. If we lose we are almost eliminated. We will be looking for chances and we will get chances."
