Bajevic relieved after wasted chances

Dušan Bajevic said Olympiacos CFP were lucky not to be punished by RC Deportivo La Coruña for their profligacy.

Dušan Bajevic, Olympiacos coach
There is an unwritten law in football which says that when you waste too many chances, you pay for it by conceding a goal. We were becoming frustrated with all the spurned opportunities and lost our concentration. I was a striker in my career and I know from experience that chances like the one Ioannis Okkas missed early on can be unnerving and frustrating for a player. I have said many times that we did not want our last game against Liverpool [FC] on 8 December to be a decisive one. That only makes matters more difficult for us. We will not go there looking for a goalless draw as that is not our philosophy. We must do our best and not worry about the result at the Riazor stadium between Deportivo and Monaco. However, when the draw was made in August nobody would have believed that we would be first in our group at this stage. My players have trusted themselves and have not played with an inferiority complex against teams with bigger reputations.

Javier Irureta, Deportivo coach
This has not been Depor's happiest night. We tried to control the match, but too often conceded possession in midfield. We failed to make the most of our counterattacking opportunities and Olympiacos looked more dangerous when they were on the break. The fact we haven't scored so far in the competition is partly due to bad luck. Today we came close, when the ball went over their goalkeeper Antonios Nikopolidis and Georgios Anatolakis cleared off the line. It is too early to say how we will play at home in the last game against Monaco, but we will aim to give our fans their first win of the competition. I cannot say whether today is the end of an era at Depor and we will have to see how the whole season progresses. Olympiacos have done well in this tournament and deserve to be on top. It has been a very tight group, with draws and narrow victories.
