Major setback
De Jong has not played since March and his planned comeback during PSV's pre-season programme was ended by pains in one of his knees which required an operation to remove a piece of bone from the joint. However, his hopes of a successful rehabilitation have been dashed after examinations revealed a calcification inside the injured knee.
Rest the cure
"It appears some lime has formed inside the knee – it is a natural process but one that does not normally occur," De Jong explained. "The doctors have told me the problem can only be solved by rest, so I will have to take things easy for the next few weeks at least." PSV have also learnt that Mika Väyrynen will be sidelined until November as the 23-year-old Finland midfielder struggles with an ankle complaint.
