Resilient Lyon prove their class

Olympique Lyonnais are celebrating securing a place in the last 16 following an impressive UEFA Champions League comeback at Olympiacos CFP.

Mental strength
Sports newspaper L'Equipe hailed Gérard Houllier's multi-talented team, saying: "As usual, Lyon showed exceptional mental strength and control in difficult surroundings. They showed determination not to sink in the first minutes when Olympiacos were leading and were first to every ball."

Comeback kings
Mental strength is a recurring theme with Lyon. With their attacking pace and precision, they seem capable of turning any game when things are going against them. Last night was the sixth occasion Houllier's men have gone behind this season only to claim victory, thus extending their unbeaten run to 19 matches.

Form team
Matchday 4 continues this evening and as things stand Lyon are the only side to have won all four group stage fixtures. A powerful four-goal barrage in 16 second-half minutes, including another Juninho Pernambucano free-kick, reiterated Lyon's status as one of the favourites to lift the trophy at the Stade de France next May.

Malouda determined
Midfielder Florent Malouda said: "We want to win it because it's what we have to do if we want to become a great team. And we can win it this season." Captain Claudio Caçapa recognised he had erred early on for Haruna Babangida's goal, saying: "I did not panic after that. I knew that was the best way to recover."

Houllier pride
Coach Houllier added: "I liked the control we showed when we were ahead. With a one-goal lead at half-time, I knew it would be hard for us. But we want to win the group in order to avoid a big fish in the last 16." At the moment it seems Lyon will rise to any challenge, no matter how big the fish.
