Heart of Midlothian FC will hope striker Mauricio Pinilla can fire them to the group stage after he joined them from Sporting Clube de Portugal on a one-year loan.
Heart of Midlothian FC have signed striker Mauricio Pinilla from Sporting Clube de Portugal on a one-year loan deal.
The Scottish runners-up announced the move on the day they learned that AEK Athens FC stand in the way of a place in the UEFA Champions League group stage, provided they can hang on to a 3-0 advantage over NK Široki Brijeg in next week's second qualifying round return. Pinilla will hope to play his part, having made his name for his country, with four goals in 18 appearances.
The 22-year-old left CF Universidad de Chile to join FC Internazionale Milano four years ago but never got a chance to prove himself. He then had brief spells at AC Chievo Verona and RC Celta de Vigo before a permanent switch to Sporting two seasons ago. Pinilla made just 20 appearances for the club, scoring five goals, before spending the second half of last season on loan at Real Racing Club Santander. In 13 games, he scored just once.
