Two penalties

Group A
Trabzonspor 2-3 Beşiktaş JK
(Karadeniz 1, Yattara 6; Yılmaz 22, Delgado 26 pen, Bobo 74)
Ertuğrul Sağlam: "It's not an easy thing to come from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against a team like Trabzonspor. Except for the first few minutes of the game, all my players did their jobs properly."
FC Porto
No match
Olympique de Marseille 1-0 RC Lens
(Zenden 73)
Erik Gerets: "The way the match turned out was as I expected because we are two struggling teams. Little by little the team is getting more self-confidence. We're not brilliant, we know that, but the players fought tonight."

Everton FC 1-2 Liverpool FC
<br< td=""> (Hyypiä 37 og; Kuyt 53 pen, 90 pen)
Rafael Benítez: "That was for all our fans. We thought we deserved to win the game. Our two penalties were both very clear. We had a lot of chances during the game but didn't take them. We kept going and got the win." </br<>

Group B
Middlesbrough FC 0-2 Chelsea FC
(Drogba 7, Alex 56)
Avram Grant: "We played good and we won. I'm happy with the win and happy that we are playing better from game to game. We started well, scored and could have scored more."
FC Hansa Rostock 1-1 FC Schalke 04
(Asamoah 33; Stein 56)
Mirko Slomka: "We did not give the game away, but it was one terrible mistake that changed the course of the match. I will talk to Manuel Neuer about this tomorrow but this can happen to anyone. After that he was back making good saves. Nine points behind Bayern is a lot but we have to fight and try to close the gap again."
Lillestrøm SK 4-1 Rosenborg BK
(Andresen 24, Søgård 44, Brenne 49, Myklebust 78; Koné 36)
Knut Tørum: "We let them score some unbelievably easy goals and that's why this result was so bad for us. We were in the game for periods and our offensive play was not bad but our defending was simply not good enough."
RC Deportivo La Coruña 2-4 Valencia CF
(Xisco 28, Bodipo 87; Joaquín 9 pen, Baraja 15, Morientes 37,73) Quique Sánchez Flores: "The team have been better away than at Mestalla all season - we've played more complete games and what we need to do now is to produce that form in our own stadium."

Group C
Olympiacos CFP 4-1 Panionios GSS
(LuaLua 6, Kovačević 64, Stoltidis 74, Galletti 81 pen; Djebbour 54 pen)
Panagiotis Lemonis: "It was a tricky encounter, especially after Panionios drew level. However we kept our cool and won in the end in a commanding fashion."
RCD Espanyol 2-1 Real Madrid CF
(Riera 1, Tamudo 52; Sergio Ramos 89)
Bernd Schuster: "The game was a complicated one from the beginning. Conceding such an early goal wasn't in our plans and was something we could have avoided. We don't have to look for excuses. We lost to a team who played very well."
AS Livorno Calcio 0-1 S.S Lazio
(Pandev 45)
Delio Rossi: "We played very well despite missing several players and I'm very happy with today's performance. We should have been more clinical inside their penalty box because we had several opportunities to score more goals."
Werder Bremen 3-2 Hertha BSC Berlin
(Hugo Almeida 58, Rosenberg 62; Andreasen 74; Gilberto 61, Okoronkwo 90)
Thomas Schaaf: "In the first half we needed patience, but after that we played with much more urgency and won deservedly. It was disappointing that we squandererd so many opportunities because we should have put the match beyond doubt much earlier."

Group D
AC Milan 0-1 Empoli FC
(Saudati 55)
Carlo Ancelotti: "The season still has a long way to go but we have to improve, especially at home. We have problems when there is no space. We are too slow and fail to put our opponents under pressure."
Rangers FC 3-0 Celtic FC
(Novo 27, 78 pen, Ferguson 56)
Gordon Strachan: "The better team won. We had a few chances but it's a surprising game because Artur Boruc has not made a save. We did make chances but didn't take them. They made chances and took them."
FC Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih 1-0 FC Shakhtar Donetsk
(Motuz 81)
Mircea Lucescu: "We dropped three important points today. Kryvbas deserved the result especially given how they played in last 25 minutes."
SL Benfica 1-1 Vitória FC
(Adu 90; Matheus 12)
José Antonio Camacho: "We had many chances to score but Setúbal are a strong team that knows how to defend. If we manage to score [against Celtic] we will be much stronger."

Group E
Villarreal CF 3-1 FC Barcelona
(Santi Cazorla 2, Senna 13 pen, 34 pen; Bojan 24)
Frank Rijkaard: "You can always look for excuses but we just didn't do our job. It was very easy for them. Villarreal were stronger in every section of the pitch than us."
Olympique Lyonnais 3-1 AS Monaco FC
(Juninho 12 pen, Réveillère 18, Benzema 50; Monsoreau 41)
Alain Perrin: "We allowed them too many chances and too many shots, which forced us back. In attack we were comfortable, but a team needs to be balanced and this was not the case. We were not consistent enough and it opened up space for our opponents to exploit. We'll have to change that in the UEFA Champions League."
Rangers FC 3-0 Celtic FC
(Novo 27, 78 pen, Ferguson 56)
Walter Smith: "It was a terrific win for us and an essential one because we were under pressure going into the game. We had already lost two games and we knew we couldn't fall any further behind Celtic. It's a real boost for us because the consequences of losing were far more damaging for us than for Celtic."
Hamburger SV 4-1 VfB Stuttgart
(Olić 7, 22, 34, Mathijsen 60; Tasci 73)
Armin Veh: "Hamburg deserved to win and they deserved to win by that many. After they took the early lead they were much more confident than we were and in our situation conceding that goal did not help at all. We have to forget this match as quickly as possible."

Group F
AS Roma 4-4 SSC Napoli
(Totti 30 pen, Perrotta 43, De Rossi 52, Pizarro 80; Lavezzi 2, Hamsik 46, Gargano 64, Zalayeta 84)
Luciano Spalletti: "We have worked hard to correct recent mistakes in defence and probably today we made other mistakes just because we were too scared of making those defensive ones. We are disappointed with the result but I'm sure we will soon overcome our problems."
FC Dynamo Kyiv 1-0 FC Zakarpattya Uzhgorod
(Rincon 60)
József Szabó: "Today we lacked a number of regulars because they are getting ready for the game against Manchester United [FC]. We still won and that is the most important thing but we need to make sure we take our chances more carefully in future."
Aston Villa FC 1-4 Manchester United FC
(Agbonlahor 12; Rooney 35, 43, Ferdinand 45, Giggs 74)
Sir Alex Ferguson: "The performance was absolutely superb, probably our best of the season. The first half in particular was absolutely excellent. It's been disappointing we haven't scored more goals and that was a big surprise considering the players we've had available."

Sporting Clube de Portugal 1-2 CD Fátima
(Cicero 15 pen, Filipe Falardo 81; Liedson 52)
Paulo Bento: "It's my responsibilty but we have to analyse our game and make no excuses for what happened. Tuesday [against Roma] is another match and competition and we must respond and play better."

Group G
Reggina Calcio 0-1 FC Internazionale Milano
(Adriano 17)
Roberto Mancini: "It's not easy to win at Reggina and I'm sure several sides will struggle here. We should have killed the game when we had chances to do it."

FC Tom Tomsk 0-1 PFC CSKA Moskva

PSV Eindhoven 3-1 VVV Venlo
(Bakkal 24, Koevermans 51 77; El Gaaouri 66)
Ronald Koeman: "We did not create many chances, but still scored three goals. Luckily on Tuesday we have another match and that will help us forget about this one as soon as possible."

Group H
Arsenal FC 2-0 Bolton Wanderers FC
(Touré 67, Rosický 79)
Arsène Wenger: "Bolton upset us in previous years and they were very resilient today. We have a good momentum now, and I liked today that the team built the success with patience, with quite a high tempo and mastered our nerves."
FC Steaua Bucureşti
No match
Levante UD 0-2 Sevilla FC
(Luis Fabiano 6, 13 pen)
Juande Ramos: "Victories are always welcome but this one was necessary because we had gone a few games without collecting any points. Let's see if we can now start a good run of results in the very important games we have ahead of us. We know that we created a lot of chances in this game but we have to be more solid and convincing."
SK Slavia Praha 3-0 FC Viktoria Plzen
(Vlček 3, 60, Suchý 47)
Karel Jarolím: "The early goal helped us but we did not play well in the first half, leaving too much space in midfield. We reshuffled for the second half and it worked. There were no doubts about victory after we scored the second goal."
