Agger out for rest of season

Liverpool FC centre-back Daniel Agger is unlikely to play again this season after learning he must undergo surgery on his troublesome metatarsal injury next week.

Škrtel cover
The Danish international, 23, has been blighted by the problem to his right foot since breaking a bone in mid-September. He has neared full fitness several times since, but on each occasion has suffered a recurrence and Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez says enough is enough. "It's a blow for Daniel but we want to get his problem sorted," he said. "We have defensive cover and Martin Škrtel is playing very well. Daniel will be back for next season."

Disappointment
Agger had been due to make his comeback in a reserve-team game in January, only for the match to be cancelled and he subsequently had a relapse. He did feature for the second string against Manchester United FC a fortnight ago but the problem has returned yet again. The youngster, who has made only five Premier League appearances this season, was named Denmark's Footballer of the Year for 2007 in January.
