The 25-year-old centre-back or holding midfielder has signed a four-year deal with the beaten 2007/08 UEFA Cup finalists despite reported interest from West Bromwich Albion FC and Real Betis Balompié. Born in France, Bougherra started his career at FC Gueugnon before moving to England where he played for Crewe Alexandra FC and Sheffield Wednesday FC, joining Charlton for €3m in January 2007. "We're delighted to sign Madjid," said manager Walter Smith. "He has a good pedigree. We are getting him at a good age and the fact he can play both at centre-back and midfield is a big bonus for us." Rangers were held to a goalless draw in the home leg of their UEFA Champions League second qualifying round tie against FBK Kaunas of Lithuania on Wednesday.
