Romania and Spain drew 1-1 in their opening Group 2 fixture of the 1984 UEFA European Championship.

It was Spain who took the lead in Saint-Etienne midway through the opening period. Nicolae Ungureanu gave the ball away and Juan Antonio Señor played a through ball into Ricardo Gallego's path. Silviu Lung felled the Spanish No10 and Lobo Carrasco converted from the penalty spot.

Romania channelled their attempts for an equaliser through the fair-haired László Bölöni, who duly obliged ten minutes prior to half-time when he drove in Marcel Coras's pull-back. Coras later created a chance for Mircea Rednic and was himself denied by Luis Arconada. Bölöni, Ungureanu and Michael Klein all chanced their arm before full time but Spain held firm for a point.
