Hosts subdued
Substitute Abdel Kader Coubadja Toure was Servette’s hero, scoring twice after coming on in the second half as the Swiss side finally subdued their hosts.

Double trouble
Coubadja Toure was sent on in the 56th minute and was soon in the thick of things, finishing off some good work by Léonard Thurre to grab a vital away goal for the visitors. The Spartak defence caved in again soon afterwards, when Coubadja Toure fired in a wonderful solo effort after jinking through the home rearguard to give Servette a two-goal cushion before the return leg in two weeks’ time.

‘We did what we wanted’
“It was very important for us to score away from home, and we did what we wanted to do,” said Servette coach Roberto Morinini. “But let’s not forget that the game lasts 180 minutes.”

Key injuries
Spartak coach Hovhannes Zanazanyan bemoaned the absence of several key players. “Injuries to our leading players did not allow us to play successfully,” he said. “I hope that we do a better job in attack in the return leg.”
