Roma face block on transfers

AS Roma have been banned from registering new players for 12 months following the transfer of Philippe Mexes.

Under contract
World football's governing body FIFA confirmed that its Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) has imposed the ban after examining Mexes's move last summer, when the player was still under contract with AJ Auxerre.

Roma responsible
A FIFA statement said: "The DRC found AS Roma responsible for inducement to breach of contract. As a consequence, a ban has been imposed on AS Roma from registering any new player, either nationally or internationally, until the expiry of the second transfer period following the notification of this decision.

Year wait
"Thus AS Roma will only be able to register new players as of the transfer period in the summer of 2006." Roma may yet decide to appeal the decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
