Ameobi adds to Newcastle woes

Newcastle United FC forward Shola Ameobi has succumbed to a hip injury and will not play again this season - adding to the striking problems at St James' Park.

Newcastle United FC striker Shola Ameobi will not play again this season after succumbing to a persistent hip injury which will now require surgery.

'A big miss'
The 25-year-old Nigerian-born forward will fly to the United States for an operation, joining fellow frontmen Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins on the casualty list at St James' Park. Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder said: "Shola's hip has all but seized up and he will be going to America for his operation. He will be a big miss." England striker Owen is also out for the season while summer signing Martins is struggling with hamstring problems.

Krul luck
The Premiership side have suffered another setback after 18-year-old goalkeeper Tim Krul, who made his debut in last Thursday's UEFA Cup win at US Città di Palermo, had to have knee surgery. "He will be out for a month or six weeks," said Roeder. "He is a young lad with a big future and we wish him a speedy recovery." Although Newcastle lead UEFA Cup Group H with two victories from two games, they sit second from bottom in England's top flight with the same amount of wins from eleven matches.
