Klasnic awaits second transplant

Werder Bremen's Croatian international striker Ivan Klasnic is facing a second kidney transplant operation after a first attempt ended in rejection late last week.

Not threatening
The forward's lawyer Klaus-Peter Horndasch said that Klasnić's body had rejected the new kidney, although he insisted that the player was not in a dangerous condition. "Klasnić's situation is not life-threatening," he said. "Despite the complications, his health is good considering the circumstances."

New kidney
The 27-year-old was told to seek a transplant after complications following treatment for appendicitis in November. Doctors have yet to analyse why the first attempt at a transplant failed, while the striker is now seeking a new kidney donor from among his family.

Unknown absence
Klasnić was initially expected to be back in training within six to eight weeks of the surgery but at the moment, no one knows when he will be fit again. "At first Klasnić was psychologically exhausted," explained Horndasch. "Today he is better - psychologically as well."
