Fortune strike favours Nancy

FC Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 AS Nancy-Lorraine Despite Darijo Srna's equaliser, Marc-Antoine Fortune's away goal gave the French side the edge in Ukraine.

Nancy on song
The French visitors began the match stronger and enjoyed the better of the first 45 minutes, with Gaston Curbelo and Fortune both spurning chances before Youssouf Hadji collected Sébastien Puygrenier's quick throw in the sixth minute and unleashed a fine curling shot which Shakhtar goalkeeper Bohdan Shust clawed away. The Moroccan international had another glimpse of goal on the half-hour following clever play by Michaël Chrétien, but this time fired wide.

Missed chances
Fortune – who joined Nancy from Dutch side FC Utrecht last month – then missed the target before Shakhtar striker Ciprian Marica also passed up the opportunity to claim a half-time lead. The second period began in a flurry of activity as Curbelo and Shakhtar's Matuzalem both blazed wide, so the opening goal did not arrive until nine minutes from time. Another cute throw-in, this time from David Sauget, again caught out the home defence and Fortune made no mistake, beating Shust from ten metres.

Vorobey response
Nancy celebrations were short-lived, however, as the Ukrainian title-holders pulled level within three minutes thanks to Andriy Vorobey's pinpoint cross which allowed Srna to nod in from close range. The hosts were unable to find a winning goal in the closing six minutes – although Marica went close with a late header – and their night ended on a sour note as Anatoliy Tymoschuk was dismissed in the final minute for a second bookable offence. The midfielder will be suspended for next week's second leg.
