Repeat show takes PSG through

Paris Saint-Germain FC 2-0 AEK Athens FC (agg: 4-0) Pierre-Alain Frau and Bernard Mendy scored as the French club secured a last-16 tie against SL Benfica.

Pierre-Alain Frau and Bernard Mendy found the net as Paris Saint-Germain FC repeated their 2-0 first-leg win over AEK Athens FC to set up a UEFA Cup Round of 16 meeting with SL Benfica.

Landreau not tested
Winger Frau opened the scoring in Paris shortly before the break and right-back Mendy converted an added-time penalty as PSG progressed with the minimum of fuss. Coming off a 4-1 home defeat by Athens rivals Panathinaikos FC last weekend, AEK rarely looked capable of fighting their way back into the tie and they survived an early scare when Pauleta flashed a volley wide on 13 minutes.

Rising shot
They only really came alive in the final 15 minutes of the first half and even then failed to test PSG goalkeeper Mickaël Landreau. Instead it was the French side who went into the interval ahead as Frau ran on to a flick by forward Péguy Luyindula and beat Stefano Sorrentino with a rising shot from just inside the area on 42 minutes. The hosts nearly struck again ten minutes later as the busy Cristian Rodriguez drew a good save from Sorrentino.

Last kick
At the other end, centre-half Socratis Papastathopoulos thundered an effort straight at Landreau following a half-cleared corner but that was as close as AEK got and the Greek team's misery was compounded when Mendy made it 2-0 with the very last kick of the game, slotting in a penalty after substitute Amara Diané had been felled in the area.
