Ottmar Hitzfeld bemoaned FC Bayern München's profligacy in front of goal after watching his side squander a host of chances, but graciously paid tribute to Getafe CF's "fine" players. Visiting coach Michael Laudrup was delighted with Getafe's second-half response and was adamant that they should not seek to protect their away-goal advantage by sitting back in the return leg next week.

Ottmar Hitzfeld, Bayern coach
In the first half we performed very well and applied the pressure from the beginning. We had a lot of chances and should have scored a second time before the break. In the second half Getafe showed their qualities in the first ten minutes – they really have fine football players. We got back control of the game afterwards, had good counterattacks, but always missed the final pass. And, as can happen, we got punished in the last minute. Getafe are a team that never give up; they wanted more than to lose 1-0 and got their reward. We wasted what would have been a good starting position for the second leg and Getafe have a slight advantage now as 1-1 is a bad result for us. If you don't score the goals then it is your own fault. We had about ten chances to their two or three, but were unable to make it 2-0. We have got to learn to be more clinical in front of goal, but we have already proven in the Bundesliga that we can win away from home.

Michael Laudrup, Getafe coach
I think the difference between the two halves of the match was evident. In the beginning we had to face a very strong Bayern side, but after the break we finally came into it and performed very well. In the last 20 minutes we were very strong, found the necessary space and were successful in holding the ball. Bayern are used to having the ball most of the time, but in the last 20 minutes we played really well. It took a long time but we finally scored an equaliser. I had a great feeling throughout the second half, even when we were losing, and 1-1 is a great result. In the second leg we have to avoid focusing only on defending. I don't think the chances are 50-50, because Bayern are still strong opponents.
