The 26-year-old South African international went for x-rays on Tuesday which confirmed the extent of the injury. He is expected to be available for selection again towards the end of next month, although is unlikely to make Everton's first European game of the season with the UEFA Cup first round starting on 18 September. Pienaar had signed for the Toffees on a permanent basis this summer after impressing on a season-long loan from BV Borussia Dortmund in 2007/08.
