VfB Stuttgart have replaced coach Armin Veh with Rainer Widmayer and Markus Babbel following Saturday's 4-1 Bundesliga defeat at VfL Wolfsburg.
Duo take over
The result left Stuttgart in eleventh place just 18 months after Veh led the club to the league title, while they currently lie fourth in UEFA Cup Group C. Veh, 47, took over from Giovanni Trapattoni in February 2006 and leaves along with assistant Alfons Higl. Another of the current technical staff, 36-year-old former Stuttgart, FC Bayern München, Liverpool FC and Germany player Markus Babbel, becomes team manager while ex-reserve team chief Rainer Widmayer, 41, becomes coach.
Decision
Suttgart president Erwin Staudt said: "We held talks with head coach Armin Veh yesterday evening and came to the conclusion that we are in need of change. Armin Veh and Alfons Higl have been relieved of their respective posts. It was a very difficult decision for us to make because we are very thankful for what they achieved here over the past three years." Babbel and Widmayer's first test comes on Thursday with the UEFA Cup trip to UC Sampdoria.
