Lucescu confident but not complacent

FC Shakhtar Donetsk may have taken a major step towards the last four of the UEFA Cup by beating Olympique de Marseille 2-0, but coach Mircea Lucescu knows there is still work to be done at a "red hot" Vélodrome.

FC Shakhtar Donetsk may have taken a significant step towards the last four of the UEFA Cup by beating Olympique de Marseille 2-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final tie, but coach Mircea Lucescu knows there is still work to be done at a "red hot" Vélodrome next week. Opposite number Erik Gerets, meanwhile, felt OM "lost their way" after conceding a second, leaving them with it all do on home soil.

Mircea Lucescu, Shakhtar coach

It's a very important victory but we still have the second leg to play and I'm sure it will be difficult there. Marseille have great fans who really get behind their team, so it will be a red hot welcome at the Vélodrome. They showed what they're capable of, that they're a solid and dangerous team who fought until the last minute. In the past we've made mistakes but today we played with intelligence.

We kept the ball well and made no mistakes after going two-nil ahead. We played really well but were definitely better in the first half. We could have scored more but Luiz Adriano missed three or four opportunities. Their goalkeeper Steve Mandanda showed his class and made several great saves. I'd like to congratulate my players who did everything they could.

Erik Gerets, Marseille coach

Shakhtar started the game very well and created several scoring opportunities in the early stages. That was tough for us but we managed to cut out their attacks and come back into the game. We played well in the first half but conceded at the end of it. We started the second playing at a high tempo, looking lively in attack, but they scored from their first chance after the break.

The players lost their way after that and didn't know how to respond. Shakhtar didn't surprise us as we've watched lots of their matches, and knew they were difficult opponents. After a two-nil defeat it will be very difficult to go through to the semi-finals, especially when you take into account the quality of the Brazilians playing for Shakhtar.
