Schaaf vows to win it for Diego

Coach Thomas Schaaf said Werder Bremen would "do everything they can to ensure the trophy ends up in Diego's hands" after their progress to the UEFA Cup final was marred by the knowledge the playmaker will miss out.

Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf spoke of his optimism that his players "will do everything they can to ensure the trophy ends up in Diego's hands" after their progress to the UEFA Cup final was marred, slightly, by the knowledge that the talismanic playmaker will miss the Istanbul showpiece through suspension. The Brazilian had underlined his importance to Bremen by kick-starting the comeback against Hamburger SV with their first goal as Schaaf's men came from two down on aggregate to prevail on away goals after a 3-2 win on the night. Not surprisingly, Hamburg's Martin Jol could not hide his disappointment.

Martin Jol, Hamburg coach
There is no question about it; I am very disappointed we didn't reach the final in Istanbul. We weren't as good as in the first match in Bremen while Werder put on a performance of greater precision. All in all it was a tough fight, with both teams scoring three goals over the two matches. For us there is no time to sit back and moan. I witnessed an heroic fight from my team and now we must concentrate on our last few matches in the Bundesliga.

Thomas Schaaf, Bremen coach
I think, all in all, we were a little bit stronger than Hamburg. Tonight my team showed they have the will and the confidence to reach the final in Istanbul. It was a very interesting match played at high intensity. Unfortunately, because of his third yellow card [in the campaign] Diego is not allowed to take part in the match against Shakhtar Donetsk – I am very sad about that. But I hope my team will do everything they can to ensure the trophy ends up in his hands. Shakhtar Donetsk are a side of a very high quality, very strong opponents.
