Mathieu sidelined for three months

Valencia CF full-back Jérémy Mathieu has been ruled out for a minimum of three months due to the ankle injury he picked up in the 1-0 round of 32 first-leg loss at Club Brugge KV on Thursday.

Valencia CF's Jérémy Mathieu could miss the rest of the season after the full-back underwent surgery on the torn left ankle ligaments he suffered in Thursday's UEFA Europa League defeat by Club Brugge KV.

The former Toulouse FC player – who has made 24 appearances for Valencia this term – was released from hospital on Saturday and will begin a specific training regime once an ankle cast is removed in three weeks. The defender is expected to be sidelined for at least three months. Mathieu, 26, said: "I'm only focused on getting back to 100% fitness as soon as possible. What would really make me happy now would be for Valencia to overturn the 1-0 result against Brugge on Thursday in order to get through. I know the players will be giving their all in order to achieve this."
