Sporting Clube de Portugal will have to wait at least six more weeks before Pedro Mendes returns to the reckoning after the Portuguese international underwent surgery on a persistent thigh problem.
The 31-year-old has not played since sustaining the injury in Sporting's 1-0 win at FC Nordsjælland on 29 July in UEFA Europa League third qualifying round. With little improvement since, Mendes had an operation on Tuesday. "He will restart his recovering programme on Friday," the club announced in a statement. "We don't anticipate him returning to training for at least six weeks." Paulo Sérgio's team host PFC Levski Sofia in Group C on Thursday.
