UEFA Europa League contenders SL Benfica have made Argentinian left-winger José Luis Fernández their first winter signing.
Fernández, 23, joins from Racing Club de Avellaneda for an undisclosed fee and has agreed a contract until summer 2015. "I came here to be a champion and I hope I can help the team to achieve that," said Fernández, who made his senior Argentina debut against Haiti last year. "I want to be integrated as soon as I can so that I can be useful to the coach. The fact that there are many South Americans in the squad will definitely help me to adapt."
Indeed he links up with fellow Argentinians Pablo Aimar, Javier Saviola, Nicólas Gaitán, Eduardo Salvio and Franco Jara at Benfica as well as eight Brazilians and a Uruguayan. Second in the Liga, eight points behind leaders FC Porto, Benfica visit UD Leiria on Sunday. They take on VfB Stuttgart in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 on 17 and 24 February having transferred from the UEFA Champions League.
