Zenit midfielder Semak out of Twente tie

Russia midfielder Sergei Semak will miss both legs of FC Zenit St Petersburg's UEFA Europa League round of 16 tie against FC Twente after breaking a bone in his foot on Sunday.

Russian international Sergei Semak will sit out both legs of FC Zenit St Petersburg's UEFA Europa League round of 16 tie against FC Twente after being laid off for up to six weeks with a broken bone in his foot.

The 35-year-old midfielder was taken off seven minutes from the end of the domestic champions' 1-0 Russian Super Cup victory over PFC CSKA Moskva on Sunday – soon after setting up the winner for substitute Aleksei Ionov. Scans revealed that he had broken a metatarsal bone and would not be able to play for four to six weeks.

Semak will therefore be unavailable for both instalments of the meeting with Dutch titleholders Twente as well as the opening games of the new Russian Premier-Liga season, which begins on Friday, and the 6 April Russian Cup quarter-final against CSKA. It is further bad news for coach Luciano Spalletti's side, who lost winger Vladimir Bystrov to a cruciate ligament injury last week.

Twente play host to Zenit on Thursday with the 2008 UEFA Cup winners to stage the return match on 17 March.
