Basel hope to halt winless streak against Videoton

FC Basel 1893 are looking to end a six-game barren spell, but they are up against a Videoton FC side with early progress in their sights.

• Videoton picked up their second Group G victory last time out, defeating Basel 2-1 to stay second in the section. A Fabian Schär own-goal gave the Hungarian outfit the lead after just two minutes, with Marco Caneira doubling their advantage before a late consolation from Schär.

• Videoton will qualify for the round of 32 with two matches to spare if they win and Sporting Clube de Portugal fail to beat KRC Genk. Basel would be eliminated should they lose and Genk win.

Previous meetings
• The sides met for the first time in UEFA competition on matchday three.

• In their only previous experience of Swiss opposition, Videoton drew 1-1 at home and lost 2-0 away against Grasshopper Club Zürich in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup second qualifying round.

• Basel's six games against Hungarian sides have ended W4 D0 L2 (W2 D0 L0 at home – W2 D0 L2 away). That other defeat was over 40 years ago in their first encounter – a 2-0 loss at Újpest FC in the European Champion Clubs' Cup in September 1972.

• Videoton are coached by 51-times capped former Portugal midfielder Paulo Sousa, who won back-to-back UEFA Champions Leagues as a player with Juventus (1995/96) and Borussia Dortmund (1996/97), as well as domestic titles in Portugal and Italy. He coached in England with Queens Park Rangers FC, Swansea City AFC and Leicester City FC before joining Videoton in May 2011.

• Basel dismissed German coach Heiko Vogel on 15 October, with the club lying fourth in the ten-team Swiss table, immediately installing Murat Yakin as his replacement.

• Murat Yakin, the older brother of fellow former Swiss international Hakan Yakin, represented Grasshopper Club, VfB Stuttgart, Fenerbahçe SK and 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The 49-times capped defender enjoyed his best seasons as captain of Basel, leading them to three league titles and two Swiss Cups. He coached FC Concordia Basel, FC Thun and FC Luzern before returning to take charge of Basel.
