Tromsø IL have dismissed coach Agnar Christensen in the wake of a 3-2 home defeat by IK Start which left the Norwegian UEFA Europa League contenders in a relegation battle with five league games to play.

Having served as assistant under his predecessor Per-Mathias Høgmo, Christensen took charge of the first team at the start of 2013, but has endured a troubled season, with a number of first-team players moving on. Worryingly for the club from inside the Arctic Circle, they have picked up just six points in their last 12 league games.

Steinar Nilsen, who had been working as Christensen's No2, will take up the reins for the remainder of the season. The 41-year-old represented Tromsø in two spells as a defender either side of a five-year stint in Italy with AC Milan and SSC Napoli. This will be his third spell at the helm, having initially guided the club into the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage.

After losing their opening Group K stage fixture 3-0 at Tottenham Hotspur FC, Tromsø host FC Sheriff on Thursday.
