Roma kept pace with Juventus in the Serie A title hunt and Wayne Rooney became Manchester United's all-time record scorer on a weekend of domestic tests for the UEFA Europa League sides.
Responding to a 27th consecutive home win for Juventus in the Italian top flight on Sunday afternoon, Roma recorded a narrow 1-0 success against Cagliari in the late kick-off. Edin Džeko made the difference with his 14th league effort this term to keep the Giallorossi within a point of Juve, though they have played one game more.
Eighth-placed Fiorentina had a more comfortable run-out in their 3-0 success at Chievo, while Rooney grabbed headlines in the Premier League with his 250th goal for Manchester United – a superb late free-kick equaliser against Stoke taking him past Sir Bobby Charlton in the history books. United's fellow English hopefuls Tottenham drew 2-2 away with Manchester City.
Elsewhere, Lyon clinched an impressive 3-1 triumph at home to Marseille courtesy of an Alexandre Lacazette double, and Spain's trio of UEFA Europa League teams managed just a point between them – Athletic holding Atlético 2-2. Schalke won for the first time in six outings and APOEL slotted seven goals past AEZ Zakakiou in Cyprus.
