UEFA Europa League-winning coach Quique Sánchez Flores has agreed a contract extension with Club Atlético de Madrid after a successful seven-month stay at the Vicente Calderón.

Quique Flores will sign the new, one-year deal on Wednesday as reward for landing Atlético's first trophy in 14 years with victory in the inaugural UEFA Europa League final against Fulham FC. That 2-1 triumph in Hamburg on 12 May put the seal on the coach's efforts in reviving the capital club's fortunes since his appointment in late October.

The 45-year-old former Getafe CF, Valencia CF and SL Benfica trainer took over an Atlético side foundering in the bottom reaches of the Spanish Liga yet, in addition to securing a comfortable ninth-placed finish, he led them to the UEFA Europa League and Copa del Rey finals.

Diego Forlán scored both goals against Fulham to secure the Rojiblancos' first European silverware since 1962, although Sevilla FC ended the double dream last Wednesday in the Copa del Rey decider – winning 2-0 at Camp Nou.

Quique Flores, a former Spanish international and Valencia right-back, had signed a contract until June when he replaced Abel Resino at the Atleti helm. His team's UEFA Europa League adventure also included memorable victories against Galatasaray AŞ and Liverpool FC.
