Debutants Käerjéng stun Lillestrøm

UN Käerjéng 97 pulled off a dream result on their European debut after the team from Luxembourg beat Lillestrøm SK 1-0 to go through to the UEFA Cup second qualifying round on away goals.

Boulahfari heroics
Käerjéng were only formed a decade ago from the merger of US Bascharage and FC Jeunesse Hautcharage - who on their only continental appearances suffered a 21-0 aggregate defeat by Chelsea FC in the 1971/72 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, still a European record for any competition. But having qualified for this competition after losing to champions F91 Dudelange in the 2006/07 Luxembourg Cup final, Käerjéng gave themselves hope a fortnight ago as they only lost 2-1 in Norway and Rachid Boulahfari's goal after being set up by Mutamba Kivunghe early in the second half at the national Josy Barthel Stadium tonight proved sufficient to take the home team through.

Friday draw
No side from Luxembourg had progressed in this competition for more than a decade, but there could be a second team through when the remaining 36 first qualifying round ties conclude on Thursday as FC Etzella Ettelbrück welcome HJK Helsinki, although they trail the Finnish side 2-0. The second qualifying round draw will be held in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday from 13.30CET with Käerjéng, eleven UEFA Intertoto Cup winners and 16 automatic entrants already assured of their places.
