Adriaanse hails 'fantastic result'

Group F reaction: AZ Alkmaar are celebrating after reaching the last 32 with a 1-0 victory against Rangers FC.

AZ Alkmaar's qualification for the last 32 from Group F after their 1-0 home win against Rangers FC naturally delighted everyone connected with the Dutch club. AJ Auxerre were also celebrating after a 5-1 home success against KS Amica Wronki left them with a great chance of taking one of the two remaining qualifying spots, although they will face stiff competition from Rangers and Grazer AK.

Unbelievable, this is a fantastic result. A dream has come true for AZ Alkmaar. We played our best football in the first half, the second half was not as good but we didn't give many chances away. We also missed a great opportunity to make the score 2-0. We were the better team. Now we also want to win the away match against Grazer. We want to finish first in this group, because that will give us a better draw for the next round. Alkmaar coach Co Adriaanse

I was very disappointed that we were caught at the start despite my warnings to the players. The system we played at the start was similar to Alkmaar's and it relies on individuals playing to their capabilities, but we were caught cold in one or two positions and it cost us the goal. But after a difficult first half we went 4-4-2 which allowed [Hamed] Namouchi to come and play more inside than [Peter] Løvenkrands and we tried to equalise. Maybe we just lacked a little bit of fortune in the second 45 minutes. We are still in pole position - I would rather be in our position than Auxerre's. Rangers coach Alex McLeish

We had wanted to win with a two-goal margin if possible, to edge Grazer AK and avoid a bad surprise in case we achieve the same result in the last game. It's done. But I would have liked my team to have taken more benefit from the red card shown to their goalkeeper in the 47th minute. Auxerre coach Guy Roux

I have a young team who are just discovering European football. I'm a little bit disappointed, though, by our start tonight. But I was happy to see how they reacted to that. In our group every team was better than us. The most impressive were Auxerre and Rangers. Amica coach Maciej Skorza
