Celta weather Odense storm

Odense BK 1-0 RC Celta de Vigo (Agg: 1-2) Ten-man Odense run out of steam at home.

Fernando Derveld scored and was then sent off as Odense BK beat RC Celta de Vigo 1-0 at the Odense Idrætespark only to bow out of the UEFA Cup in the first round 2-1 on aggregate.

Derveld scores
Derveld's thunderous free-kick on 62 minutes gave the Danish side hope of clawing their way back from a 2-0 first-leg deficit, but the momentum quickly swung back in Celta's favour when the defender was shown a red card for a rash challenge on Eduardo Caudet moments later.

Red card
The pair were battling for a loose ball when Derveld went in with his studs raised, catching Caudet high on the thigh as the midfield player looked to clear while on the ground.

Fierce drive
The goal had come against the run of play. Striker Simon Jørgensen was brought down on the edge of the box and Derveld, who had forced José Manuel Pinto in the Celta goal into making a sharp save from a similar range in the first half, powered a fierce drive from 20 metres into the roof of the net.

Zaza saves
Odense had enjoyed much of the possession up to that point without, Derveld's early strike aside, causing Pinto any undue concern. Instead it was Celta who had come closest to breaking the deadlock when, on 25 minutes, Aleksandr Mostovoi outfought Derveld to Benni McCarthy's flick-on and released a low drive that Karim Zaza in the Odense goal saved sharply with his feet.

Mostovoi misses
Mostovoi had two chances to put the tie beyond doubt at the start of the second half and those misses began to look costly when Derveld put Odense ahead, but the defender's subsequent dismissal settled matters. Substitute Catanha had a penalty saved by Zaza with seven minutes to play and he later hit the post, but by then Odense's challenge had wilted.
