Hannover 96 coach Mirko Slomka has completed the signing of R. Standard de Liège's Sébastien Pocognoli, having watched the left-back take on his side four times last season.

Hannover 96 have bolstered their defence with the signing of Belgian international left-back Sébastien Pocognoli, the 25-year-old arriving from R. Standard de Liège.

Pocognoli is under contract to his new club until 2016, with no details of any transfer fee for the seven-times capped player being released. A 2008/09 Dutch Eredivisie winner with AZ Alkmaar, Pocognoli played against Hannover four times last season in the UEFA Europa League – two group stage fixtures and both legs of a round of 16 tie, which Standard lost.

"He started all four of those UEFA Europa League matches against us, which is why I know his qualities," Hannover coach Mirko Slomka said. "We all agreed that we needed to do something on the left wing. I am happy we have been able to realise this transfer."

KRC Genk old boy Pocognoli is Hannover's fourth winter recruit following the acquisitions of defender Johan Djourou and midfielders André Hoffmann and França. Die Roten meet FC Anji Makhachkala next month in the UEFA Europa League round of 32.
