Tottenham Hotspur warmed up for their return to UEFA Europa League action with a precious win, while there was acute disappointment for Napoli in Serie A.
Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham look increasingly credible as Premier League title hopefuls and they gave their chances a major shot in the arm with a 2-1 success at rivals Manchester City FC, Christian Eriksen sealing matters with a late effort. That lifted second-placed Spurs within two points of the English summit – one point further away than Napoli in Italy, though the mood at the Stadio San Paolo is markedly different after a 1-0 loss to Juventus ended their run of eight consecutive wins as well as their spell on top.
There were frowns too for Manchester United, who went down 2-1 at Sunderland ahead of their round of 32 opener away to Midtjylland. No such worries this weekend for United old boy Gary Neville, on the other hand, as he finally oversaw a first Liga win at the Valencia helm, Los Che downing Espanyol 2-1. Elsewhere, Porto beat Benfica in Portugal – where pacesetters Sporting CP also prevailed – Olympiacos suffered a rare reverse in Greece and Fenerbahçe established a four-point cushion in Turkey.
