Elsewhere, Ligue 1 leaders Nice took their domestic form onto the continental stage with a 1-0 triumph at Salzburg. They had previously gone 15 UEFA competition away matches without a victory. Francesco Totti made his 100th UEFA club competition appearance as Roma lost a two-goal advantage to draw 3-3 with Austria Wien, while Guillaume Hoarau struck a hat-trick – despite missing a penalty – to help Young Boys to a 3-1 success over APOEL.

It was a night that briefly looked like it would belong to UEFA group stage debutants Dundalk, who led 2008 UEFA Cup winners Zenit but ultimately suffered their first Group D defeat.
