Atlético were the first side through, Fernando Torres (2) and substitute Antoine Griezmann among the scorers in a 5-1 away success at Lokomotiv Moskva. Lazio levered out Dynamo Kyiv with a 2-0 victory in Ukraine, and a 1-1 draw at Zenit was enough to take Leipzig to the last eight. There was agony for Plzeň, though, who overturned a 2-0 deficit at home to Sporting CP only for Rodrigo Battaglia's header to win the tie in extra time.
In the later matches, Arsenal staved off disaster after conceding early against AC Milan to win 3-1 – 5-1 on aggregate. A goalless draw against Dortmund ensured that Salzburg will battle on, but final hosts Lyon go no further after following up a 1-0 win in Russia with a 3-2 defeat at home to CSKA Moskva, losing their tie on away goals.
